Posting Competition Scores

When to post a competition score vs. a casual score

What SHOULD Be Logged as a Competition Score ("C" Score):

  1. Individual Stroke Play Tournaments
      • Especially those conducted under the Rules of Golf and where scores are verified by the Committee.
      • Examples: Club Championship, USGA qualifiers, state or regional amateur events.
  1. Match Play (in certain formats)
      • If the match play round is played under full Rules of Golf and the actual hole-by-hole score is available (e.g., for stroke play or Stableford), some formats may be eligible.
  1. Better Ball or Team Events
      • Only your individual score (adjusted for handicap purposes) can be posted, and only if it's a valid round (e.g., you played at least 7 holes in a 9-hole round or 14 in an 18-hole round).
  1. Other Sanctioned or Official Events
      • If it is a formal competition organized by a golf association, club, or league and deemed eligible by the Committee to be a "competition score."

What Should NOT Be Logged as a "Competition Score":

  • Casual rounds, even if competitive among friends.
  • Charity scrambles, shambles, or formats where the Rules of Golf are not fully in effect.
  • Practice rounds before tournaments.
  • Rounds where preferred lies or non-standard rules are used (e.g., winter rules, lift/clean/place).

How to Post It:

  • Use the GHIN app, your club’s kiosk, or your regional golf association’s website.
  • The round must be played under acceptable conditions:
    • At a course with a valid Course Rating and Slope Rating
    • Over at least 14 holes (for 18-hole round)
    • Played under the Rules of Golf

If the round is a designated competition, you or the Committee should mark the score as a "C" when posting it.

Final Tips:

  • Always post hole-by-hole scores when possible, as the system can calculate net double bogey adjustments and PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation).
  • If in doubt, check with your Handicap Committee or club pro — they decide what constitutes a "Competition Score."
