Handicap Adjustment Explained

Formula Cap Patrol uses for determining a member’s handicap adjustment

Cap Patrol’s recommendation is based on the golfers Cap Score

All members below a Cap Score of 50 are recommended for a Handicap Adjustment.

Major factors that contribute to a low Cap Score are:

  • Frequent placing in Net Events in the past 24 months (High EPS Score)
  • High variance in the Last 12 Months High and Low Index
  • Lower Competition Index vs Current Index
  • High variance between Home vs Away scoring

Handicap Adjustments in Cap Patrol are classified in two tiers.

Full Adjustment Tier = Cap Score of 39 or below, Cap Score highlighted in red in the Member Summary Report.

First Adjustment Tier = Cap Score of 49-40 Cap Score highlighted in yellow in the Member Summary Report.

Full Adjustment Tier

Members with a Cap Score of 39 or below are recommended for a Full Handicap Adjustment. These members will appear with their Cap Score highlighted in red in the Member Summary Report

For the Full Adjustment Tier, Cap Patrol uses the following formula to determine the Handicap Adjustment:

Current Index – [ the lesser of the 12 Month Low or Competition Index ] = Suggested Adjustment (+/-)

Example of the formula for a Full Handicap Adjustment using competition index:

8.9 6.5 = -2.4

NOTE: numbers in parentheses (2.4) are negative values

First Adjustment Tier

Members with a Cap Score in the range of 49-40 will receive the First Tier Handicap Adjustment. These members will appear with their Cap Score highlighted in yellow in the Member Summary Report.

This formula is the same at Full Handicap Adjustment formula divided by 2. Thus cutting the adjustment in half.

[Current Index – [ the lesser of the 12 Month Low or Competition Index ]] / 2 = Suggested Adjustment (+/-)

Example of the formula for a First Tier Handicap Adjustment using 12 month low index:

[31.5 - 27.6] / 2 = -1.9

New Index

In the two examples above the members should have their handicaps adjusted -2.4 stokes and -1.9 strokes respectively

The New Index column will show the recommended new handicap index after the Suggested Adjustment is made. This is calculated by using:

Current Index + Suggested Adjustment = New Index

Example of the New Index Formula:

8.9 + (-2.4) = 6.5

NOTE: Players that have a (+/-) of 0.9 or lower should not be adjusted per WHS guidelines
